We were just informed that two school buses in the Port Allen, Louisiana area were involved in a collision today. It looks like there are many ambulances on scene, with some victims being sent to local hospitals. Thus far, Lawyer LaHatte confirms that twenty (20) students were taken to the hospital, in which the accident took place in The Parish of West Baton Rouge. Predictably, many families, including parents, were on the scene distraught over this news. The accident occurred at approximately 3:30p.m. on Highway 415 near Highway 620, which is North of Port Allen.
Airmed was on scene taking some children to the hospital. The buses originated from Devall Middle School and Chamberlin Elementary, which means it probably involved small children. The buses were operated by First Student.
Unfortunately, in being involved in many car accident wreck lawsuits, it still befuddles me as why school buses don’t have seatbelts? There is a nation-wide initiative for children to always be in car seats or have on seatbelts when traveling in vehicles. But, when they are grouped in 50 in buses, no seatbelts are anywhere to be found? I really feel that legislation needs to be passed requiring all school buses to be fitted with proper seatbelts for children to avoid injuries during even minor fender benders and car accidents.
